The Transformation Toward Modern Ways of Working
When I founded Socialcast, our guiding mission was to create a new way to work. I saw an opportunity to leverage the massive changes in the ways people were communicating and collaborating in the consumer market, and apply them to the workplace. Now, the shift away from the desktop to mobile devices provides new opportunities for companies like ours to partner with IT to develop business-ready solutions. Supporting more modern ways of working are difficult IT challenges, and VMware has a history of solving these problems in a unique and compelling way, which is one of the reasons I chose to sell Socialcast to VMware more than 2 years ago. It’s also why I have agreed to take a broader role at VMware as Vice President of Mobile Computing in the End User Computing division at VMware. In this new role I am responsible for Socialcast as well as the Horizon Workspace product.
Roughly eighteen months ago, as we pulled together the strategy for the End User Computing division, we decided to organize the business around two initiatives – our core desktop products, and the multi-device workspace with a product we call Horizon Workspace. We see clearly how the way we work has to change from a traditional desktop delivery platform to an anytime-anywhere model. We are working to deliver what enterprises need and want – modern ways of working that are secure and compliant and widely embraced by employees.
In the modern enterprise, four key things are required to get work done: applications, content (data), people, and conversations. Today Horizon Workspace offers access to applications and content or data. It is easy to see how Socialcast can add people and conversations to deliver a comprehensive platform that is secure, compliant, and easy to manage, with low operating costs.
With this combined, comprehensive platform we remain committed to openness, choice, and simplicity. Many customers tell us, particularly those facing BYOD and Corporate Owned, Personally Enabled (COPE) scenarios, that they want choice – choice of deployment, data sources, applications and devices – and they want an easy way to manage it all without having to deal with multiple vendors.
Inevitable changes will reshape the workplace over the next 3-5 years, as more employees demand tools and applications that are social and mobile. Large global enterprises are planning now for the evolution of their infrastructures to support these new requirements. We are working to shift the IT paradigm – from managing desktops and devices to managing the platform that gives people access to applications, content (data), people, and conversations – all in the right context for getting work done.
In the coming months you will hear more about our plans to bring Socialcast and Horizon Workspace together in ways that will accelerate our vision for a better way to work. Our loyal Socialcast customers will also hear how these changes will continue to increase the value of what they have invested in to integrate Socialcast into key business processes.
While most of the world enjoys the slower pace of summer, the Horizon Workspace and Socialcast engineering teams and I will be hard at work, putting the finishing touches on a number of new things that we believe will accelerate the journey we have shared as we continue to work together to change the way people work.
